Abstract

Data indicates that women constitute the majority of MSN users (51.3%), with most
falling within the 18–34 age range. This study aims to investigate the influence of
social comparison and self-esteem on body dissatisfaction among female
undergraduate MSN users at Universitas Islam “45” Bekasi.The research
employed a quantitative approach with a correlational design. The total of 150
active female MSN users were selected via quota sampling. The body dissatisfaction
r alpha = 0,934, the social comparisson r alpha =0,943, and the self esteem scale
r alpha = 0,932. Results confirmed all hypotheses: (1) social comparison and self
esteem were significantly and positively correlated (r = 0.543, p = 0.000); (2) self
esteem was negatively correlated with body dissatisfaction (r = -0.827, p = 0.000);
and (3) social comparison and self-esteem significantly predicted body
dissatisfaction (F = 557.329, p = 0.000). The coefficient of determination (R²) was
0.883, indicating that 88.3% of the variance in body dissatisfaction was
explained by the model.
