Abstract
This study aims to determine the communication strategies implemented to support the communication development of deaf children in the Kotak Menara Community, Bekasi City. The study employed a descriptive qualitative approach with data collected through observation, in-depth interviews, and documentation. The research informants consisted of the community founder, volunteers, parents of deaf children, and deaf children who are members of the community. Data analysis was conducted using the Miles and Huberman model, which includes data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing.
The findings reveal that the communication strategies implemented in the Kotak Menara Community combine verbal and nonverbal communication in an integrated manner. Verbal communication is carried out through language habituation and vocabulary repetition in daily activities, while nonverbal communication is conducted through gestures, facial expressions, eye contact, and visual media. The role of volunteers and parents is a crucial factor in the success of communication strategy implementation, as both actively assist children's language development. In addition, the use of visual media such as pictures, storybooks, written materials, hearing aids, and cochlear implants helps children understand messages more effectively. Although there are several obstacles, including differences in children's language abilities, limited access to therapy, and a lack of social awareness regarding deaf children's communication needs, the community continuously strives to overcome these challenges through seminars, workshops, and educational activities. The communication strategies implemented have a positive impact on the development of language skills, social interaction, and self-confidence of deaf children.
