Abstract

Interpersonal communication plays a crucial role in building trust between tattoo artists and clients during the creation of temporary tattoos. This study aims to analyze interpersonal communication between tattoo artist @bar.inktattoo and clients using Altman and Taylor’s Social Penetration Theory. This study employs a qualitative method with a descriptive approach. Data were collected through observation, in-depth interviews, and documentation from one key informant and seven clients selected through purposive sampling. Data validity was tested through triangulation of sources and techniques. The results show that interpersonal communication develops gradually through six layers of social penetration: biographical data, preferences, goals and aspirations, religious convictions, deep personal feelings, and the core self. Communication not only serves to convey information about tattoo designs and procedures but also fosters openness, a sense of security, and trust, thereby strengthening the interpersonal relationship between the tattoo artist and the client. These findings indicate that interpersonal communication contributes to improved service quality and a positive client experience.
