Abstract
Emotional intelligence is the ability to recognize, understand, manage, and express emotions adaptively. During adolescence, emotional intelligence may be influenced by family communication patterns and the intensity of online game playing. This study aimed to determine the relationship between family communication patterns and online game playing intensity with
emotional intelligence among high school students. The study employed a quantitative correlational design involving 73 students. Data were collected using the Emotional Intelligence Scale, Family Communication Pattern Scale, and Online Game Playing Intensity Scale. Data were analyzed using Spearman Rank correlation and multiple linear regression. The results showed that family communication patterns had a positive but non-significant relationship with
emotional intelligence (ρ = 0.194; p = 0.099). Meanwhile, online game playing intensity had a significant negative relationship with emotional intelligence (ρ = -0.314; p = 0.007). These findings indicate that higher online game playing intensity is associated with lower emotional intelligence, whereas better family communication tends to be associated with higher emotional
intelligence.
