Abstract

This study aims to examine the process of self-identity formation among K-Pop fans among university students based on George Herbert Mead's Symbolic Interactionism perspective. This study employed a descriptive qualitative method using in-depth interviews, observation, and documentation as data collection techniques. The findings reveal that students' self-identity as K-Pop fans is formed through three stages: the play stage, the game stage, and the role-taking stage. In the play stage, students begin to recognize and imitate K-Pop cultural symbols such as music, fashion, and fandom attributes. In the game stage, students develop an understanding of the values, norms, and rules within the fandom community. Finally, in the role-taking stage, their identity as K-Pop fans becomes part of their self-concept while maintaining a balance between fandom activities and their social and academic responsibilities. This study demonstrates that K-Pop fandom serves not only as a form of entertainment but also as a space for university students to construct and develop their identities through symbolic interaction.
