Abstract
he increasing amount of polypropylene (PP) plastic waste and spent coffee grounds (SCG) has become an environmental concern, encouraging the utilization of these wastes into value-added products, one of which is composite materials. This study aimed to investigate the effect of hot-pressing time on the mechanical and physical properties of polypropylene-based composites reinforced with spent coffee grounds. An experimental method was employed using three hot-pressing time variations: 3 minutes (KWP 1), 5 minutes (KWP 2), and 7 minutes (KWP 3), with a composition of 80% polypropylene and 20% spent coffee grounds. The tests conducted included tensile testing based on ASTM D638 Type I, as well as density, water absorption, and thickness swelling tests according to JIS A5908:2003. In addition, the composite microstructure was observed using a digital microscope. The results showed that the hot-pressing time significantly influenced the properties of the composite. KWP 1 exhibited the best performance, with a tensile strength of 1.32675 MPa and a strain value of 0.14324, while KWP 2 showed the highest density of 1.05 g/cm³. The lowest water absorption and thickness swelling values were also obtained by KWP 1, at 1.85% and 1.59%, respectively. Microstructural observations revealed that KWP 1 had a more uniform distribution of spent coffee ground particles and fewer voids than the other variations. Based on these findings, it can be concluded that a 3-minute hot-pressing time provides the optimum condition, producing a better balance of mechanical properties, physical properties, and microstructural characteristics. This study demonstrates that spent coffee grounds have considerable potential as a reinforcing filler in polypropylene composites, contributing to waste valorization while supporting the development of more environmentally friendly composite materials.
