Abstract

Toluene is a compound found in crude oil and is used as a fuel additive to increase
octane ratings. This study aims to analyze the effect of adding toluene to pertalite
fuel on the performance of a 125 cc motorcycle engine, including torque, power,
fuel efficiency, and exhaust emissions. The testing was conducted using a
dynotest on a Yamaha Lexi 125 cc motorcycle with four fuel variations: 100%
pertalite (P100%), 95% pertalite + 5% toluene (P95%+T5%), 90% pertalite +
10% toluene (P90%+T10%), and 85% pertalite + 15% toluene (P85%+T15%).
The results indicate that adding toluene improves engine performance. At 7000
rpm, engine power increased from 9.9 HP (P100%) to 10.5 HP (P95%+T5%),
11.2 HP (P90%+T10%), and 11.8 HP (P85%+T15%). Torque also increased from
15.66 Nm (P100%) to 16.89 Nm (P85%+T15%). Fuel consumption showed the
best efficiency with the P90%+T15% mixture. However, exhaust emissions
increased, particularly in HC and CO levels, where HC emissions rose from 150
ppm (P100%) to 190 ppm (P85%+T15%), and CO emissions increased from 2.1%
to 2.8%. Nevertheless, the emission values remained within permissible
regulatory standards.Thus, adding toluene can enhance engine performance and
fuel efficiency, but its impact on exhaust emissions must be considered. Further
studies are needed to balance performance improvements with environmental
concerns.
