Title
: Analysis of Female Characters in Mulan Live - Action (2020)
And Mulan Animated Movie (1998)
This research analyzes the gender representation of women in the animated film
Mulan (1998) and Mulan Live-Action film (2020), with a focus on raising gender
issues regarding patriarchal culture that affects the position of women in the two
film versions of Mulan (1998 and 2020). This research uses Judith Butler's theory
of performativity, which provides a framework for understanding that gender is not
something inherent in nature, but the result of social construction that is realized
through money-repeated behavior. The role of masculinity is the only path Mulan
has to access to defy gender norms and as a form of resistance to the harmful
patriarchal culture. This research uses a representation approach with narrative
data collection methods to develop the story and characterization and viduals to
sharpen the character of Mulan (1998) & (2020) related to gender issues.
