Abstract

The welding processes SMAW and GMAW have different heat outputs, which can result in varying microstructures and mechanical properties. An analysis is needed to understand how these two methods affect the hardness and microstructure of SPCC steel material, especially with variations in welding current. The material is cut into pieces measuring 155 mm in length, 120 mm in width, and 2 mm in thickness, with three pieces corresponding to three different current variations. Each specimen is then cut into two parts for the welding process. After welding, the specimens are further cut using a milling machine into 6 pieces, each measuring 20 mm in length, 200 mm in width, and 2 mm in thickness for hardness and microstructure testing. In the weld metal region, a 100 A current showed the highest Vickers hardness compared to 95 A and 105 A, due to the presence of a martensite lath structure, which has much harder mechanical properties than the structures found at 95 A and 105 A currents. The optimal welding result was achieved with a 100 A current, analyzed at both the face weld and root weld.
