Abstract

The phenomenon of female smokers in Islamic higher education institutions continues to
attract public attention as it is often associated with prevailing social norms and religious
values. Female smokers frequently encounter stigma and social judgment that influence
their acceptance within the campus environment. In this context, social communication
plays an important role in helping female smokers establish social relationships and gain
acceptance. This study aims to examine how female smokers use social communication
to gain social acceptance in Islamic universities. This research employed a qualitative
approach using a phenomenological method. Data were collected through in-depth
interviews, observation, and documentation involving one key informant and two
informants who were female student smokers at an Islamic university. The study applied
Herbert Blumer’s Symbolic Interaction Theory, focusing on the concepts of symbol and
meaning and self. The findings reveal that female smokers perceive smoking as a means
of relieving stress, calming themselves, and becoming part of their peer group. They also
demonstrate awareness of social perceptions, leading them to adjust their behavior and
maintain positive social relationships. The study found that social acceptance is achieved
through continuous communication and social interaction. Through positive
communication and effective interpersonal relationships, female smokers are able to gain
social acceptance despite the stigma that still exists within the Islamic higher education
environment.
