Abstract

Indiscipline, low self-regulation, and differences in students’ memorization abilities are often challenges in the implementation of the Tahfiz Al-Qur’an program, even though the program has been systematically implemented. This condition indicates that the success of Tahfiz Al-Qur’an learning is not only determined by memorization methods but also by teachers’ strategies in developing students’ self-regulation and discipline. This study aims to describe the strategies of Islamic Religious Education (PAI) teachers in improving students’ Tahfiz Al-Qur’an abilities through self-regulation and discipline, as well as to identify the supporting and inhibiting factors in the implementation of the Tahfiz Al-Qur’an program at SMPIT At-Taqwa Pusat. This study employed a qualitative approach with a case study design. Data were collected through observations, semi-structured interviews with the Tahfiz Coordinator, Islamic Religious Education teachers who teach Tahfiz, and students, as well as documentation studies. Data analysis was conducted through data reduction, data presentation, and conclusion drawing, while data validity was tested using source triangulation and technique triangulation. The results showed that teachers’ strategies were implemented through setting memorization targets, mapping students’ abilities, grouping students based on ability levels, applying talaqqi, muraja’ah, and ziyadah methods, providing gradual guidance, conducting memorization submissions, and carrying out periodic evaluations. Students’ self-regulation was developed through goal setting, time management, independent muraja’ah, and evaluation of memorization progress, while discipline was formed through schedule regularity, readiness for memorization submission, consistency in muraja’ah, and responsibility toward memorization targets. Supporting factors included teacher competence, structured learning methods, a religious school environment, students’ initial abilities, and parental involvement. Inhibiting factors included unstable learning motivation, student fatigue, differences in abilities, limited parental assistance, and unequal mastery of learning methods among teachers. This study concludes that structured, adaptive, and sustainable teacher strategies can support the improvement of Tahfiz Al-Qur’an abilities through strengthening self-regulation, discipline, and collaboration between schools and families.
