Abstract
This study examines discriminatory language found in job advertisings for
the hospitality sector on Instagram, focusing on language use that contributes to discriminatory practices. This study employs a semantic approach of Lexical Relations Saeed (2003) and Yule (2010), as well as Fairclough’s (1995) Critical Discourse Analysis. The data consisted of 90 screenshots from three Instagram accounts: @loker.jakarta, @lokerjabodetabekkar, and @hoteljob.id. The results show that 122 words and phrases were identified, consisting of 26 phrases related to physical appearance, 44 words and phrases related to gender, and 52 phrases related to age requirements, with age being the most dominant aspect. The
analysis indicates that the use of these words and phrases not only represents an “ideal” worker but also contributes to the reproduction of discriminatory practice through a process of naturalization within the hospitality sector’s recruitment practices.
