Islamic Religious Education at SMA Negeri 2 Tambun Utara. Islamic Religious
Education Study Program, Faculty of Islamic Studies, Universitas Muhammadiyah
Indonesia - Bekasi, 2026 CE/1448 AH.
This study was motivated by the importance of instilling the values of tolerance
through Islamic Religious Education (IRE) as an effort to develop students' character
in respecting diversity within the school environment. The diversity of religions,
ethnicities, cultures, and social backgrounds requires students to develop mutual
respect in order to create a harmonious school community. This study aimed to examine
students' perceptions of tolerance in Islamic Religious Education, describe the
strategies employed by IRE teachers to instill tolerance values, and identify the factors
influencing the development of students' tolerant attitudes at SMA Negeri 2 Tambun
Utara. This research employed a qualitative approach using a descriptive research
design. The research participants consisted of an Islamic Religious Education teacher
and students of SMA Negeri 2 Tambun Utara. Data were collected through observation,
interviews, and documentation. The data were analyzed through the stages of data
collection, data reduction, data presentation, and conclusion drawing and verification
to obtain a comprehensive understanding of the phenomenon under investigation.
The findings revealed that most students had positive perceptions of tolerance.
They perceived tolerance as an attitude of respecting and appreciating differences in
religion, opinions, ethnicity, and social background without engaging in
discrimination. These values were reflected in mutual respect, cooperation,
maintaining harmonious relationships, and treating all classmates equally within the
school environment. IRE teachers fostered tolerance through teaching the concept of
tasamuh (Islamic tolerance), providing exemplary behavior, cultivating positive habits,
facilitating classroom discussions, offering advice, and strengthening character
education throughout the learning process. The development of students' tolerant
attitudes was influenced by internal factors, including self-awareness and personal
character, as well as external factors such as family, peer environment, social media,
and teachers' role modeling. This study concludes that Islamic Religious Education
plays a significant role in shaping students' tolerant attitudes when supported by
appropriate teaching strategies, exemplary teachers, and a conducive school
environment. The findings are expected to serve as valuable input for schools and IRE
teachers in developing learning processes that emphasize not only cognitive
achievement but also the strengthening of tolerance as an essential character value for
students' social life.
