Abstract
This research examines the use of nonverbal communication in the Aksi Kamisan in Jakarta as a tool of resistance against the slow resolution of Human Rights violation cases in Indonesia. The objective of this research is to identify and classify the forms of nonverbal communication based on the categories by Verderber et al., as well as to analyze their meanings through Roland Barthes semiotic theory. Employing a descriptive qualitative method, this study dissects nonverbal signs such as body movements (kinesics), vocals (paralanguage), and the use of time (chronemics). The analysis was conducted to uncover how these nonverbal communications operate across the levels of denotation, connotation, and myth. The results demonstrate the presence of seven dominant forms of nonverbal communication. Through semiotic analysis, it was found that the protest attributes (such as standing in silence, black umbrellas, and black clothing) denotatively constitute ordinary elements, however, connotatively, they signify symbols of unresolved grief and resilient resistance against injustice. The consistency of this movement forms an ideological myth that successfully nurtures public memory to refuse to forget the unresolved human rights issues.
