Abstract

This study aims to examine the relationship and influence of self-control and fear
of missing out (FoMO) on cyberloafing behavior among university students.
Cyberloafing refers to the use of the internet for non-academic purposes during
lectures, which has the potential to disrupt focus and academic performance, with
self-control and FoMO viewed as psychological factors influencing the emergence
of such behavior. This study employed a quantitative approach with a correlational
design involving 330 students of Universitas Islam “45” Bekasi aged 19–25 years,
selected using proportionate stratified random sampling. Data were collected using
a cyberloafing scale (α = 0.905), a self-control scale (α = 0.904), and a FoMO scale
(α = 0.968), all of which had been tested for content and construct validity. The
research hypotheses were analyzed using Spearman Rho correlation and multiple
linear regression analysis. The results indicated a significant positive relationship
between FoMO and cyberloafing (r = 0.443; p < 0.05), a significant negative
relationship between self-control and cyberloafing (r = −0.487; p < 0.05), and a
significant simultaneous effect of self- control and FoMO on cyberloafing (F =
70.727; p < 0.05; R² = 0.302).
