Abstract

In an ideal structural design, columns are positioned precisely at the center of the pile cap to ensure uniform load distribution to the piles. However, during construction, column eccentricity frequently occurs due to limited construction space, shifts in the building grid, the presence of underground utilities, and construction tolerances of foundation works. In this case study, the eccentricity was primarily caused by the owner’s request to reduce the building dimensions in order to support the expansion of the landscaped garden area. This condition generates additional moments and unbalanced reaction forces in the piles, which, if not properly analyzed, may lead to cracking of the pile cap or failure of the substructure.
This study aims to analyze the effect of column position eccentricity on the pile cap response in the construction project of the 10-storey Universitas Esa Unggul Bekasi building, with particular emphasis on axial force distribution, shear force, and bending moment. The superstructure analysis was carried out using ETABS V22, while the substructure was analyzed manually in accordance with SNI 1726:2019 and SNI 2847:2019, utilizing cone penetration test (CPT) data, pile specifications, and structural loading data.
The recapitulation results indicate that under eccentric conditions, the maximum axial force in the piles increased from 930.20 kN in the ideal condition to 1183.46 kN, representing an increase of 27.23%. The pile cap shear force increased from 905.39 kN to 1158.64 kN (27.97%), while the bending moments in the pile cap along the X and Y axes increased from approximately 478 kN·m to 611.04 kN·m (27.81%). Although the maximum axial force reached 169.06 tons, this value remains below the design pile capacity of 250 tons, indicating that the foundation system is still within safe conditions.
