Abstract

This study aims to analyze the form of Register in the speech of supporting characters in the novel Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen using the theory of Systemic Functional Linguistics (SFL) developed by Michael Halliday. Register is analyzed through three main variables, namely Field (topic of conversation), Tenor (relationship between participants), and Mode (communication channel), in two contexts: domestic and public. This study uses a descriptive qualitative method with data sources in the form of dialogues in novels selected based on their relevance to social and linguistic contexts. The results show that the choice of language by the supporting characters reflects the social status, personality, and cultural values of 19th century British society. In the domestic context, interactions are informal and full of emotional expression, while in the public context, there is an adjustment of
language style according to social hierarchy. One of the supporting characters, Mrs. Bennet, is expressive and ambitious, while Mr. Bennet is sarcastic and passive. This
study confirms that language in literary works functions as a social representation and can be analyzed through the SFL framework.
