Abstract
Electrical Discharge Machining (EDM) is a modern machining method used
to shape conductive materials through electrical spark discharges. In this process,
the type of electrode used plays a crucial role in determining machining efficiency
and the quality of the final result. This study aims to compare the effectiveness of
three types of electrodes—copper, brass, and graphite—in influencing the material
removal rate (MRR) and tool wear rate (TWR). The experiments were carried out
using standardized machining parameters for each electrode to ensure a fair
comparison. The workpiece material used was carbon steel, which is commonly
processed using EDM. After machining, the results were evaluated based on the
obtained MRR and TWR values, along with visual observation of the surface finish.
The test results showed that the graphite electrode achieved the highest material
removal rate, although it also experienced significant electrode wear. The copper
electrode provided a balanced performance with stable MRR and TWR, while the
brass electrode exhibited the lowest wear but also produced a relatively low material
removal rate. These findings indicate that no single electrode type is superior in all
aspects, and the ideal electrode choice depends heavily on the primary objective of
the machining process.
