Abstract

Steel is a type of material that is widely used in the industrial, construction and automotive fields. Corrosion on steel is something that cannot be avoided, but the corrosion rate process can be slowed down by controlling the corrosion rate. One way to inhibit the rate of corrosion is by administering inhibitors. Red betel leaves contain tannin compounds which can function as corrosion inhibitors. Red betel leaf extract is used as an organic inhibitor to reduce the rate of corrosion of steel in rainwater. Research was carried out with variations in soaking time of 120 hours, 240 hours and 360 hours with varying inhibitors of 5 ml, 10 ml, 15 ml and no inhibitor. From the research results, it was found that the highest corrosion rate was found in samples that were not given inhibitors, namely 6,456 mpy at 360 hours of immersion. Meanwhile, the lowest corrosion rate was found in the sample given 5 ml inhibitor, namely 4,150 mpy at 360 hours. In samples given 5 ml of inhibitor, the inhibitor efficiency value was greater than the others with a value of 35.71%.
