Abstract

This research aims to determine the effect of fiber direction in banana stem fiber
composites reinforced with polyester resin on the tensile and micro strength of helmets.
The fiber used in this research is banana stem fiber and the matrix used is resub
polyester Yukalac 157 BTNQ-EX. The variations in this study are the fiber directions
of 0/45°, 0/90° and 45/90°. Composites are made using the hand lay-up technique.
There are two tests that will be carried out, namely the tensile test using the ASTM
D638 standard and the impact test using the ISO 197 standard. From the data that has
been obtained and analysis through research, it can be concluded that the highest
tensile strength is obtained from a polyester resin composite reinforced with banana
stem fiber whose fibers are in the same direction. 45/90° with a value of 13,0689
N/mm2, while the lowest tensile strength was obtained from a 0/45° fiber direction
composite, with a value of 10,1465 N/mm2.
