Abstract

440C steel is a high-hardness martensitic stainless steel that is widely used in industrial applications thanks to its high hardness and corrosion resistance under certain conditions. To achieve optimum mechanical properties, this steel requires
heat treatment involving the quenching process. This research addresses the effect of salt concentration in quenching cooling water media on the hardness value and microstructure of 440C steel. The addition of salt to the water increases the cooling speed by increasing the thermal conductivity. The results show that the optimum salt concentration (15%) produces the maximum transformation of austenite to martensite, resulting in a martensite dominant microstructure with high hardness. Too low salt concentration leads to the formation of retained austenite which can decrease hardness, while too high salt concentration can trigger extreme cooling,
causing the formation of carbides which can increase the hardness of the material. Therefore, control of salt concentration is essential in the quenching process to ensure the final quality in 440C steel.
