Abstract

This research explores the soundscape in cemetery as a unique phenomenon
in the context of urban space, with a main focus on the relationship between
sound, fear and other spaces. Using approaches from Roland Barthes'
Listening theory, David Howes' Embodied theory, and Michel Faucoult's
Heterotopia. This research tries to deepen an understanding of how sounds
in cemetery shape and create a new experience for urban communities. The
method used is ethnography, where field observations were carried out as
well as interviews with participants who are closely related to the cemetery,
such as grave guards and residents who live around the cemetery. By
linking these three theories, this research provides a new view of the
complexity of the relationship between sound, fear and other spaces. Where
the results of this research refer to the impact of hyperreality which shows
that media representations shape people's perceptions of sounds, fear and
cemetery, thereby creating an alternative reality that is difficult to
distinguish from physical reality. For example, horror films often explore the themes of death and funerals, where graves are often depicted as dark, mysterious and full of negative energy.
