Abstract

This study aims to determine the feasibility of polyester resin reinforced with palm fiber as an alternative material for SNI helmets that are more environmentally friendly. Biocomposites were made using the hand lay-up method with variations in fiber volume fractions of 10%, 15%, and 20%. After the manufacture of the composites, these materials were tested for tensile, impact tests and physical properties tests in the form of tests of density, water absorption and thickness expansion. The test results show that the addition of palm fiber to the biocomposite has a positive impact, namely increasing the tensile strength and impact strength. The test results showed that the highest tensile and impact strength was obtained at the fiber volume fraction of 20%: 80%, which was 25.73 MPa, while the impact strength obtained was the absorption energy and impact strength, which were 1.481 Joules and 0.042104 J/mm2, much higher than the impact strength of the helmet material. SNI which is only 0.3125 Joule and 0.00972 J/mm2 while the tensile strength value has decreased which is not too significant when compared to the standard value used of 33.93 MPa, then the results of the physical property tests carried out show that the density value the average value of each volume fraction is above the JIS A5908-2003 standard and for the average value of water absorption and thickness development, the average value does not exceed the JIS A5908-2003 standard. This shows that the biocomposite polyester resin reinforced with palm fiber does not meet the Indonesian national standard values to be an alternative material in the manufacture of SNI helmets.
