Abstract
This study aims to analyze the translation strategies applied in translating Dangdut song lyrics from Indonesian as the source language to English as the target language in thirteen translated Dangdut songs on Yusril Yudane's TikTok account. Furthermore, this study also examines the singability aspect in the translated song lyrics. The method used in this study is descriptive qualitative, focusing on the analysis of song lyrics translation in audiovisual and performative contexts. This study uses Gottlieb's (1992) theory of translation strategies and Low's (2017) concepts of song translation and singability. The results show that the translator mainly used five subtitling strategies; expansion, transfer, paraphrase, resignation, and deletion. The results suggest that the translator adds information to add meanings in the original lyrics. In terms of singability, the perfect balance among sense, naturalness, rhythm, rhyme, and singability is rarely attained, suggesting that translating Dangdut lyrics for TikTok does not only involve linguistic transfer but also cultural mediation.
