Abstract

This study aims to analyze emotional and social communication in the recovery process of Generation Z during the life after breakup phase. The study employed a descriptive qualitative approach using Social Penetration Theory (SPT) as its theoretical framework. Data were collected through in-depth interviews with one key informant and six Generation Z informants who had experienced romantic relationships lasting at least two years and had undergone a breakup. The findings reveal that emotional communication plays a significant role in helping individuals express, regulate, and understand post-breakup emotions through self-disclosure, emotional regulation, and personal reflection. Meanwhile, social communication contributes to the recovery process through social support, face-to-face interactions, and direct conversations that provide emotional validation and assist individuals in rebuilding their social relationships. Recovery occurs gradually as individuals reach a stage of acceptance, manage their emotions adaptively, and receive support from trusted social environments. The study concludes that emotional and social communication complement each other in helping Generation Z achieve emotional and social balance following the end of a romantic relationship.
