Abstract
Abstract. People with Down syndrome still face limitations in obtaining employment, particularly those requiring customer communication skills. This study aims to analyze the service communication between baristas with Down syndrome and customers in an inclusive coffee shop. The research used a qualitative approach with a case study method. Informants included two baristas with Down syndrome as primary informants, three non-disabled employees, and three customers as supporting informants. The results indicate that service communication was quite effective through the use of verbal and nonverbal communication, supported by communication adjustments from coworkers and customers. The dominant form of communication accommodation was a convergence strategy, namely the use of simple language, clear instructions, a slower speech rate, and the use of facial expressions, eye contact, and gestures. Although there were challenges in understanding complex information, these obstacles could be overcome through support from coworkers and an inclusive work environment. These findings suggest that successful service communication depends not only on the abilities of baristas with Down syndrome, but also on the support of the work environment and the willingness of customers to adapt, resulting in effective and inclusive service.
