Abstract
Potholes are one of the main causes of traffic accidents that can damage vehicle components and endanger driver safety. This research aims to design and build a prototype pothole detection system and automatic deceleration control based on an HC-SR04 ultrasonic sensor and a stepper motor using an Arduino Mega 2560 microcontroller. The system is designed to read changes in road surface conditions through the ultrasonic sensor, then control the speed of a NEMA17 stepper motor via an A4988 driver as an automatic deceleration response when a pothole is detected, accompanied by an LCD I2C indicator and a buzzer as a warning. Testing was conducted on a simulated track using three stepper motor speed settings, namely 100 step/s, 200 step/s, and 300 step/s, with 20 trials for each setting. The results show a detection success rate of 70% at 100 step/s with a speed error of -0.85%, 100% at 200 step/s with an error of 1.99%, and 95% at 300 step/s with an error of 8.30%. This variation in success rate was influenced by the limited effective detection range of the ultrasonic sensor at the mounting angle used, which left the system with only a short response time before reaching the pothole, as well as by the longer traversal duration at low speed, which caused unevenness in the track surface to occasionally trigger detection. These results indicate that the 200 step/s setting provides the most optimal performance, offering the best balance between speed accuracy and detection consistency.
