Abstract
This research examines the use of metaphors in the state political speech discourse delivered by President Prabowo, using Lakoff & Johnson’s (1980) conceptual metaphor theory. This research aims to identify the types of conceptual metaphors, determine which type of metaphor dominantly appears, and analyze the use of metaphors as a linguistic
instrument in political speeches. This research employs a descriptive qualitative method by collecting several utterances from President Prabowo’s speech as data. The data analysis process involves mapping between the source domain and the target domain using the conceptual
metaphor theory by Lakoff & Johnson. The results of this study indicate that there are three types of conceptual metaphors in President Prabowo’s speech: structural metaphors, which are the dominant conceptual metaphors, followed by ontological metaphors, and finally orientational metaphors, which appear the least. Additionally, this research found main conceptual metaphor formulations such as CORRUPTION IS AN ENEMY, TIME IS MONEY, and POLITICAL ECONOMY IS A JOURNEY. In conclusion, the metaphors used in political discourse do not merely function as a tool to embellish language, but serve as an instrument that conceptualizes the speaker's thoughts to simplify economic problems so that the audience can understand them more easily.
