This study aims to analyze Imam al-Nawawi’s thoughts as presented in the book At-Tibyan fi Adab Hamalat al-Qur’an regarding Qur’anic ethics and the ethics of learning. The research is motivated by the moral degradation observed among students in both formal and non-formal education settings, necessitating a solution to address this issue. In this context, selecting the book At-Tibyan fi Adab Hamalat al-Qur’an serves as an effort to help resolve these existing problems.
The author employs a qualitative research method utilizing a library research approach and content analysis. Data collection was conducted through a literature review of various sources, including classical texts (kitab), books, and journals relevant to the topic. The data analysis process involved six stages: data collection, data reduction, data classification, data presentation, analysis and interpretation, and drawing conclusions.
In summary, the research findings indicate that the Qur’anic ethics outlined in At-Tibyan fi Adab Hamalat al-Qur’an encompass three areas: first, ethics regarding Allah, such as sincerity (ikhlas) and maintaining proper intentions; second, ethics when reciting the Qur’an, such as ritual purity (taharah), reciting with measured pace (tartil), contemplation (tadabbur), and reverence (khusyu’); and third, ethics regarding the physical copy of the Qur’an (mushaf), such as honoring it and upholding its sanctity. Finally, there is the etiquette to be observed after studying the Qur’an, such as putting its teachings into practice and sharing that knowledge with others. The ethics of learning encompass maintaining a sincere intention for the sake of Allah, respecting the teacher, cultivating humility (tawadhu), remaining diligent and disciplined in study, and upholding both physical and spiritual purity throughout the pursuit of knowledge. Imam al-Nawawi explains that the blessing of knowledge is attained through proper conduct (adab), sincerity of intention, and noble character. Overall, the ethical concepts found in the book At-Tibyan fi Adab Hamalatil Qur’an remain relevant to contemporary educational concepts; the ethical values within the text can serve as a normative and practical foundation for nurturing a future generation that excels academically, morally, and spiritually.
