Abstract
Currently cotton fabric waste is one of the textile wastes whose utilization is still not optimal, cotton fabric waste has the potential as a reinforcing material in composites. The utilization of this waste is expected to reduce environmental pollution while producing alternative materials that are lightweight and have good mechanical properties. One of the factors that affect the quality of the composite is the fiber direction, because it determines the material's ability to distribute the load. This study aims to analyze the effect of variations in the direction of cotton fabric waste fibers on the mechanical properties, physical properties, and microstructure of composites based on Unsaturated Polyester Resin (UPR). The study was conducted using the hand lay-up method with a composition of 20% cotton fabric waste fiber and 80% polyester resin and the addition of 1% MEPOXE catalyst. The fiber direction variations used were 45°, 90°, and 180°. The 45° fiber direction variation produced the best performance with a tensile strength of 6.90109 MPa, an elastic modulus of 0.59266 GPa, a density of 0.794 g/cm³, a water absorption of 1.2%, and a thickness swelling of 0.89%. Microstructural observations showed that the 45° direction had better fiber-matrix bonding and fewer voids and fiber pull-outs. Thus, the 45° fiber direction was the best configuration in making composites from cotton fabric waste with an Unsaturated Polyester Resin matrix.
