Abstract
This study is motivated by the differences in the pronunciation of forklift-related terms between forklift operators in Indonesia and native speakers of General American English. The study aims to analyze the phonological aspects of how these terms are pronounced by forklift operators in Indonesia, as well as the phonological interference influencing this pronunciation. Data collection involved 30 forklift operators in Indonesia pronouncing 20 forklift-related terms. These pronunciations were transcribed phonetically and analyzed phonologically based on place of articulation, manner of articulation, and the interference affecting them. The results reveal differences in place and manner of articulation, regarding vowels, diphthongs, and consonants, between native General American speakers and the Indonesian forklift operators. These differences arise from phonological interference, specifically phoneme reduction and alteration resulting from the English pronunciation system, which is far richer and more complex than the Indonesian system.
