Abstract
The increasing amount of polypropylene (PP) plastic waste and spent coffee grounds has encouraged their utilization as environmentally friendly composite materials. This study aimed to analyze the effect of hot-press temperature on the mechanical properties, physical properties, and microstructure of recycled polypropylene composites reinforced with spent coffee grounds. The composites were fabricated using a fixed composition of 80% recycled polypropylene and 20% spent coffee grounds with three hot-press temperature variations: 150°C (KTP 1), 160°C (KTP 2), and 170°C (KTP 3) for 5 minutes. Mechanical testing was conducted using the tensile test according to ASTM D638, while physical properties, including density, water absorption, and thickness swelling, were evaluated based on JIS A5908:2003. Microstructural observations were also performed to support the analysis. The results indicated that the hot-press temperature significantly affected the composite characteristics. The composite produced at 150°C exhibited the best mechanical performance, with a tensile strength of 1.32675 N/mm² and the highest strain value of 0.09079%, while neat polypropylene showed the highest tensile strength of 1.70893 N/mm². In terms of physical properties, the 150°C specimen showed the lowest water absorption, the 160°C specimen exhibited the lowest thickness swelling, and the 170°C specimen had the highest density. Microstructural analysis revealed that the composite processed at 150°C had a more uniform filler distribution and fewer voids than those processed at higher temperatures. Therefore, a hot-press temperature of 150°C is considered the optimum condition for producing polypropylene–spent coffee ground composites with a balanced combination of mechanical and physical properties.
