This research is motivated by the important role of Islamic Religious Education (PAI) in shaping students' character, particularly in fostering attitudes of tolerance and nationalism through the internalization of religious values. This study aims to determine the influence of understanding Islamic Religious Education (PAI) material on attitudes of tolerance and nationalism of students at SMAN 8 Bekasi. Understanding of PAI material is not only oriented towards cognitive aspects but is also expected to be internalized in students' social and national lives. This study used a quantitative approach with a regression study type. The study population was all 360 grade XI students of SMAN 8 Bekasi, with a sample of 78 students determined using the Slovin formula and proportional random sampling techniques. Data collection techniques were carried out through a PAI material comprehension test and a questionnaire on attitudes of tolerance and nationalism. Data analysis used normality tests, homogeneity tests, correlation tests, coefficient of determination tests, and significance tests (t-tests) using SPSS version 21.
The results showed a positive and significant effect between understanding Islamic Religious Education material and students' attitudes of tolerance at SMAN 8 Bekasi. Furthermore, understanding Islamic Religious Education material also had a positive and significant effect on students' attitudes of nationalism, with a correlation value of 0.713, which is considered strong. These findings indicate that the better students' understanding of Islamic Religious Education material, the better their attitudes of tolerance and nationalism. Based on these findings, Islamic Religious Education learning plays a significant role in shaping students' social and national character through internalizing the values of tolerance, religious moderation, and patriotism in everyday life.
