Abstract
Concrete is a superior construction material in terms of compressive strength but possesses a significant weakness in its low tensile strength and brittle nature. In line with the growing awareness of sustainable development, utilizing plastic waste as fiber reinforcement (Fiber Reinforced Concrete) has become an innovative solution to improve concrete ductility while reducing environmental impact. This study aims to analyze the effect of adding waste strapping band fibers on the mechanical performance of concrete, specifically compressive strength and splitting tensile strength.
Previous research by Khoirunnisaa (2022) demonstrated that strapping band waste, which possesses polypropylene polymer characteristics, is capable of inhibiting crack propagation in concrete. Based on this foundation, this study employs a laboratory experimental method with a target concrete strength of f'c 25 MPa. The independent variables in this study are fiber addition percentages of 0%, 0.4%, 0.8%, and 1.2% by weight of sand, with fiber lengths cut constantly 50 mm. The specimens used are standard cylinders of 15 cm x 30 cm, totaling 24 concrete samples.
Test results at 28 days indicate that the addition of strapping band fibers has a more significant impact on improving splitting tensile strength than compressive strength. Analysis shows that the optimum fiber content is 1.2%; at this level, compressive strength increased by 11.37% (averaging 28.56 MPa) compared to normal concrete (averaging 25.64 MPa). Meanwhile, splitting tensile strength increased by 102.80% (averaging 6.87 MPa) compared to normal concrete (averaging 3.39 MPa). The study concludes that strapping band fibers are effective as an additive to enhance concrete toughness in non-structural and light-structural applications.
